Rated turnover is theoretical. Biological filtration depends on mature media and oxygen and maintenance as well as circulation.

AQUARIUM FILTRATION GUIDE

How Much Filter Flow Does Your Aquarium Need?

Quick answer: your aquarium filter should provide reliable circulation while supporting established biological filtration. The number on a filter box is only a rated flow value. An aquarium filter flow calculator divides gallons per hour or liters per hour by actual tank water volume to show theoretical turnover. Use measured flow for a more realistic comparison.

What does aquarium turnover per hour mean?

Turnover describes how many tank volumes of water theoretically pass through a filter in an hour. For example a rated 300 US gallon per hour filter on a 75 gallon tank produces a theoretical four turnovers per hour.

Why is real filter flow lower than the box rating?

Manufacturer test conditions may differ from your installed aquarium. Filter media, pipe bends, hose length, elevation and accumulated debris all create resistance. Some designs also recirculate water internally or have adjustable flow. If you can measure the installed return flow safely, enter that value in the optional field to compare it with the rating.

How do you calculate gallons per hour for a fish tank?

First estimate your actual water volume rather than using only the label on the tank. Then take the filter flow rating in gallons per hour and divide by that volume. If your rating is in liters per hour the tool converts units automatically.

Does a higher turnover rate mean better filtration?

Not necessarily. Biological filtration depends on mature bacteria and sufficient surface area and oxygen and water contact with suitable media. A strong pump pushing water past unsuitable media may not control ammonia. Very strong currents can also create uncomfortable swimming conditions. Always interpret flow together with water tests and your fish behavior.

What kind of filter works for African cichlids?

Canister filters and sumps and hang on back designs and sponge filters may all be useful when selected and maintained appropriately. Tank size and waste load and cleaning access affect the decision. There is no universal filter type that solves overcrowding or cichlid aggression.

Should you use the actual aquarium volume?

Yes. The same filter produces different turnover figures depending on water volume. Rocks and sand reduce the actual water quantity in a decorated Malawi aquarium. Use the Fish Tank Volume Calculator to estimate a more realistic volume. Do not increase stocking just because a turnover figure appears high.

What should you check if measured flow decreases?

Review intake strainers and hoses and the impeller and the filter media for safe maintenance needs. Avoid washing all biological media in untreated chlorinated tap water or replacing everything at once. Recheck the installed flow and water tests after cleaning. Always follow the filter manufacturer safety instructions and disconnect power before opening equipment.

FAQs

How do I calculate filter turnover?

Divide filter flow per hour by actual aquarium water volume using matching units.

Is 4 times per hour good for every cichlid tank?

No. A turnover figure alone cannot show adequate biological filtration or fish suitability.

Are GPH and LPH the same?

No. GPH is US gallons per hour and LPH is liters per hour. The tool converts them.

Why is my actual filter output lower than rated flow?

Media and plumbing and fouling commonly reduce installed flow.

Can high filter flow prevent ammonia spikes?

Not by itself. A mature functioning biological filter is needed to process nitrogen waste.

Does this tool decide how many fish my aquarium can hold?

No. Use a stocking assessment and consider adult fish behavior and tank footprint.
