Fin and tail rot cichlid disease is one of the most common bacterial infections in aquarium fish, and visible tissue damage can start within a few days of the first stress event if water conditions stay poor.

This fin and tail rot disease is caused by gram-negative bacteria, mainly Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, and Vibrio species, that live in every aquarium but only turn dangerous once a fish’s immune system is weakened by stress or dirty water. 

Younger and juvenile cichlids tend to be more vulnerable since their immune systems are still developing, though fish of any age can be affected once conditions turn unfavorable.

If treated early, mild cases of fin and tail rot can regain about 90 to 95 percent of their original fin tissue, while moderate infections typically recover 60 to 80 percent. 

Severe cases that damage the fin base often recover only 30 to 50 percent of the lost tissue, and some fish may never regain their full fin shape. African cichlid fin rot and peacock cichlid fin rot cases both follow this same pattern: a stressed fish, an opportunistic bacterial trigger, and a tank environment that lets it take hold.

What Is Fin and Tail Rot in Cichlids?

Tail Rot refers to the loss of a fish’s tail (or fin) due to the rotting of a soft tissue caused by bacterial infection. Tail Rot is similar to Fin Rot (also caused by bacterial infection), and as the name suggests, Tail Rot refers to the rotting of the Caudal Fin.

Fin Rot, like Tail Rot, is a bacterial infection caused by a type of bacteria that are naturally present in any aquarium. Normally the immune system of a healthy Cichlid checks the bacteria and causes no damage to any part of the body.

However, the bacteria gradually multiply and spread (and begin to infect and damage tissue) along the edges of the fins due to weakened defenses of the Cichlid (due to stress, insufficient or poor water quality, or injuries).

Tail Rot (or Fin Rot) is particularly common to African Peacock Cichlids due to their territorial nature, and frequent fin nip attacks which creates small wounds/breaks that becomes the perfect entry point for bacteria.

Signs and Symptoms of Fin Rot in Cichlids

Fin rot is hard to see in its early stages, and gets more obvious in later stages. The inspection of fish on a daily basis is very important since fin rot can lead to permanent fin loss.

Early Symptoms

When the first stages of cichlid fin rot occur, there is no edge damage because they are only showing the first signs of early discoloration. Thin layers of discolored or deteriorating tails and fins are often the first signs of fish tail rot. Early changes can be very subtle. At early stages, fins can be slightly tattered during their movement.

Advanced Symptoms

In the later stages of fin rot in fish, the damage is no longer able to be hidden. The edges of the fins and tails are tattered and discolored. They also show inflammation at the base where they connect to the body. Fin rot at this stage is also considered life-threatening. The earlier the diagnosis the better.

How to Heal Cichlids with Fin Rot

The environment needs to be addressed first in any fin and tail rot treatment because a medicine-based treatment is futile without an environmental fix. The treatment for cichlid fin rot requires a two-pronged approach: cleaning the tank while also addressing the bacteria.

Changing Water

A common first step in the treatment for fin and tail rot is a water change of 25 to 50 percent. Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels along with a pH and temperature check may be needed to correct the most common cause of disease in aquariums, including fin rot.

Quarantine Tank

An infected cichlid can be placed in a quarantine tank to prevent the spread of infection and to control treatment. This step is important because bacterial/fungal infections causing fin and tail rot are contagious to any fish that share the same environment.

Medications

Fin rot is generally treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics and methylene blue can be used to treat a fungal infection if one develops. Erythromycin, Melafix, tri-sulfa tablets, and Maracyn are additional cichlid fin and tail rot treatment options. Be sure to check the specific treatment for safety to cichlids, as some products can harm different species of fish.

Salt Treatment

Aquarium salt is popularly used for treating mild fin rot. As sodium chloride, aquarium salt assists in the closure of wounds and decreases the stress levels of fish. However, using it for extended periods (beyond 10 days) can cause strain to fish organs. Does aquarium salt treat fin rot in all instances? Not really.

It does not treat the causes of fin rot like the poor quality of water. For the complete treatment of fin rot, water quality also has to improve. It also must be noted that some sensitive cichlid species can be adversely affected by the presence of salt in the water, so make sure to use it as sparingly as possible.

How to Prevent Fin and Tail Rot Disease

Avoiding fin rot is simpler and cheaper than treating it. Frequent maintenance of the fish tank makes it possible to avoid most cases of fin rot.

Can fish recover from Fin Rot?

Yes. In most cases where Fin Rot is treated and the water conditions are improved, fish fully recover.  The tail and fins that were once damaged will grow back in a matter of weeks.

What does Fin Rot look like in the early stages?

The first signs of Fin Rot are the slight color changes and minor fraying of fin edges.  In early Rot, there are still no tissue changes.  You will have to look at the cichlid closely and regularly to check for early signs.
